Unconventional Conservation: Canadian Biosphere Regions Leading the Charge
The way we think about conservation is changing, and Canada’s biosphere regions are helping to lead that transformation. Across Canada, biospheres are reshaping what conservation looks like – moving beyond traditional models to embrace a more inclusive, collaborative and forward-thinking approach. Biospheres are living examples of how caring for the landscape, protecting biodiversity and taking action to address climate change can go hand-in-hand with community well-being and sustainable development.
A new blog from the Canadian Biosphere Regions Association (CBRA) explores how biosphere regions are leading in unconventional conservation. These regions work across sectors and jurisdictions to build local capacity and foster partnerships rooted in place. From integrating Indigenous knowledge to using citizen science, community-based monitoring and innovative land use planning, biospheres, like the Beaver Hills Biosphere, are demonstrating that effective conservation requires the involvement of people who live and work on the land.
