Exploring Canadian Identity Through the Heart of Biosphere Regions

It is an important time to reflect on the values, landscapes and partnerships that shape our country. One powerful lens through which we can explore our national identity is Canada’s network of UNESCO biosphere regions – places like the Beaver Hills Biosphere – that are models for how people and nature can thrive together.

In a thoughtful new piece from the Canadian Biosphere Regions Association (CBRA), biospheres are highlighted as reflections of Canada’s diverse geography, cultures and ways of knowing. The blog explores how these designated areas are rooted in strong local leadership, guided by Western and Indigenous knowledge, and how they foster innovation through collaborative, place-based sustainability initiatives. It illustrates how biospheres help foster a sense of belonging, stewardship and responsibility among residents, visitors and communities – key components of Canadian identity.
